Before You Go — Checklist
Make sure you have everything ready before leaving for the test centre:
- Valid photo ID — passport, Danish residence card (opholdstilladelse), or EU national ID card. A regular driver's licence from your home country is usually not accepted as ID.
- Booking confirmation — know your test time and test centre location
- Your driving school's details — your instructor should have registered you. If there's any issue, you'll need to contact them
Important: Arrive at least 15 minutes early. If you arrive late, you forfeit your test slot and lose the 600 DKK fee.
Step 1: Check In
When you arrive at the Færdselsstyrelsen test centre, you'll go to a reception or waiting area. A test supervisor will check your photo ID against the registration. Your phone and any bags are typically stored in a locker or left at the front — no electronic devices are allowed in the test room.
Step 2: Enter the Test Room
You'll be directed to a workstation with a touchscreen computer. Multiple candidates take the test at the same time, each at their own station. The room is quiet and supervised.
Before the test starts, you'll see an introduction screen where you can:
- Choose your language — select English (or Danish, or another available language)
- Go through a tutorial — a brief walkthrough of how to use the touchscreen and navigate questions
Step 3: The Test Itself
The test begins when you press start. Here's what the experience is like:
- You see 25 scenarios, one at a time
- Each scenario shows an image or short 3D video of a traffic situation
- Below the image, there are 2–4 statements about the situation
- For each statement, you tap Yes or No
- A countdown timer shows your remaining time (25 minutes total)
- You can navigate between scenarios — go back to review previous answers
- A progress indicator shows which scenarios you've completed
Tip: If a scenario includes a video, watch it carefully. The video may show a car approaching an intersection, and the timing of arrival matters for the right-of-way question. You can usually replay the video.
Step 4: Submitting Your Test
When you've answered all 25 scenarios (or when time runs out), you submit the test. Any unanswered questions are marked as incorrect, so make sure you answer everything — even if you need to guess on one or two.
Step 5: Getting Your Result
Your result appears on screen immediately after submission. You'll see:
- Pass or fail
- Number of errors — you need 5 or fewer to pass
- Some centres show which scenarios you got wrong (but not the correct answers)
If you pass, congratulations! Your result is registered digitally and your driving school will be notified. You can now proceed to book your practical driving test.
If you fail, you'll need to rebook and pay the 600 DKK test fee again. There's no waiting period, but availability at test centres varies.
Test Centres in Denmark
Færdselsstyrelsen operates test centres in major cities across Denmark. Some of the busiest are in:
- Copenhagen (København)
- Aarhus
- Odense
- Aalborg
- Esbjerg
- Roskilde
- Helsingør
Your driving school will help you choose a test centre and book a time. Centres in larger cities tend to have more available slots.
Tips for Test Day
- Get a good night's sleep — the test requires concentration. Being tired leads to careless mistakes
- Eat before you go — low blood sugar affects cognitive performance
- Don't cram — if you've been practising consistently, last-minute cramming adds stress without helping much
- Read each question twice — many errors come from misreading, not lack of knowledge
- Use all your time — if you finish early, go back and review flagged questions
- Don't panic if one scenario is hard — you can afford up to 5 errors and still pass
After You Pass
Once you pass the theory test, the next steps are:
- Continue practical driving lessons with your driving school
- Complete the mandatory manoeuvre course (if not already done)
- Book the practical driving test — your driving school handles this
- Pass the practical test and get your Danish driving licence
Your theory test result is valid for a limited time, so don't wait too long before taking the practical test.
